BEACON TUNES

Whitney Young’s Official Music Review

BEACON TUNES

A new music group has been lighting up the halls of Whitney Young for the past couple of weeks. From the residence halls of the University of Wisconsin, Madison campus, Dorm Room Studios (aka DRS) has risen to popularity. Comprised of two 2017 Whitney Young graduates, Lamont Wallace and Zion Richardson, and another University of Wisconsin student, Emik Vayts , there is no question why the group has caught fire in our halls.

The group’s first release titled That Ass Was Fat reached a whopping 4,300 listens on soundcloud, mostly coming from current students of Whitney Young. I truly enjoy the song. It is a clever mix of upbeat humored rap mixed with clever rhymes. My favorite part of the song, like most listeners is towards the end when Lamont and Zion do a mock phone call and tell a story about two college girls. The beat to the song is surprisingly nice, considering it was produced in a dorm. This song was a great first drop to kickstart the future of DRS.

The most recent song that DRS released is called Gameday. It is similar to That Ass Was Fat in the playful style rap that is present, but I personally prefer the beat and think that the lyrics are even more clever. However, most of DRS’s fans enjoy That Ass Was Fat more, probably due to the comical subject matter and short telephone kit at the end of the song. I interviewed two fans from Whitney Young to see how they enjoyed the show:

“The production for Gameday was untouchable a classic sample mixed with a nice beat, but I find That Ass Was Fat more funny.” -Darnell Dowd (‘18)

That Ass Was Fat was a hit. I can’t wait for more music from them.” -Xavier Castaneda

Overall, the fans are happy with DRS and I am looking forward to new music coming out from them in the near future. You can check their two current songs at:
