My Dear, Melancholy

Abel Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd just dropped his new project My Dear, Melancholy. I should just start by saying everyone needs to listen to this. No matter what genre you prefer, I feel that this mixtape will surprise you. I am a fan of R&B myself, yet I was still surprised on how The Weeknd used pop-styled beats to make his R&B music. Even though everything is slowed down, he uses a lot of synthesizers and electronic add ins to help his music appeal to the pop community that he has dominated for years.

This 6 song mixtape definitely contrasts to The Weeknd’s last major work, STARBOY. It is much slower and sadder than the up tempo pop album STARBOY. However, it is a nice change of pace. The music is very good to listen to if you are feeling down and need a pick me up. My favorite song on the tape is, despite popular opinion, Call Out My Name. Most people that I interviewed made statements such as:

“Try me is my favorite it puts me in my feelings every time.” -Sloane Williams, Kenwood Academy ‘18

However, some people think otherwise. For example, some people said

“It didn’t meet my expectations to be honest.” -Chris Nguyen ‘18

Overall, despite the haters I felt The Weeknd did a great job with this impromptu piece. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Check out C Love’s Suggestion of the Week below.
