When and how did you start dancing?

My parents put me in ballet classes when I was younger, but I wasn’t too serious about it then. In eighth grade I joined the dance department at school and began taking classes at Hubbard Street. I became really serious about dance when I made the Poms team at the end of eighth grade.

How do you balance your time between schoolwork and sports?

Our practices go really late sometimes until 7 p.m. I’m fortunate to have a short commute because I live close to the school, so I can start homework right away.

Do you have any rituals you do before competitions?

Before we go on the floor at competitions the team gets into a circle together and we pray. After that we do our team chant.

What is the most exciting part about being on the Poms team?

I think the most exciting part about Poms is performing. Whether we’re down state or at pep rallies, I love performing the dances we’ve worked really hard on and hearing the crowd’s reaction.

Do you plan on continuing this sport throughout college?

I would like to continue dancing throughout my life and would join a dance team at a college.

How big of a role does dancing play in your life?

Dancing plays a large role in my life. I never realized how much I love dancing as well as watching others dance. I now try to go to as many dance related things as possible from classes/workshops, movies and shows.

Do you intend to pursue dancing as a career?

I do not intend to pursue dance as a career, but I will keep dancing as much as I can.

What is your favorite genre of music?

My favorite genres of music are pop, R&B, hip hop and house.

How does dancing inspire you?

Dance inspires me to try things I normally wouldn’t, like different stunts. Watching others dance also inspires me to become a better dancer.
