The 95th Annual Academy Awards

With last year to take into account – where John Travolta mispronounced Adele Dazeem’s name and Will Smith slapped Chris Rock – the Oscars never cease to be a memorable night. So, come March 12, we’ll see which films make cinema history.

So far, the sequel to the highest grossing movie ever, Avatar: The Way of Water, is nominated for the music categories (both music and original score), sound and visual effects.

As for comic book movies, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are running against each other. They are all nominated for visual effects, while only The Batman and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are up for sound. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is also nominated for both music categories (“Lift Me Up” from Rhianna brought the tears – the entire movie did).

Top Gun: Maverick, another popular movie, is nominated for visual effects, sound, and original song. It was the highest grossing film of 2022, and my family and friends who watched it feel like it did the first movie justice.

I watched one of the Documentary Short Film nominees, The Flagmakers on Disney Plus, and it was very interesting to see the diversity of the country’s largest American flags and flagpoles manufacturer. Immigrants and refugees sew the flags and work alongside locals who question their relationship with this country and conservatives.

I feel that Everything Everywhere All at Once takes the cake. Michelle Yeoh already won the Golden Globe for Best Actress, and she deserves the Oscar, too. This is definitely one of my favorite movies – dare I say it handled the multiverse better than another nominated Marvel movie?

The Fabelmans, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and Nope, which all represent different genres, definitely stand a chance to win any possible category they’re in – whether it’s the drama and direction of The Fabelmans, the craftiness and sense of humor from another Glass Onion story, or the morals we learn from the horror that stares us right in the face in Nope.

All we know for sure is that Sunday, March 12 is going to be an interesting night.
