Staycation Winter Break Ideas

If you’re anything like me, staying in Chicago during winter break sounds less than appealing. That’s why I interviewed students around the school to try and gather ideas about possible activities to embark on right here in our city.

Keith Calloway’19 said he plans to spend time at the beautiful and busy ice skating rink at Maggie Daley Park. “The ribbon is a great place to hang out. Usually when I go I also stop to see the christmas tree and head over to Daley Plaza to see the Christkindelmarket,” says Calloway. The festivities in downtown Chicago radiate with holiday spirit; it’s the perfect place to get you in a celebratory mood.

If you’re eager to spend more time outdoors you should head over to zoolights at Lincoln Park Zoo. “I go to zoolights every year with my family, it is sort of a magical experience. Definitely worth standing out in the cold!” exclaims Whitney Young senior, Annika Chrobak-Prince’19. Once it gets dark out the trees and buildings light up with vibrant colored LED’s, transforming the zoo into winter wonderland.

Speaking of winter wonderland, it isn’t a true Chicago winter if you don’t spend a day at Navy Pier’s Winter Wonderfest. With attractions for people of all ages, it is the perfect environment to spend quality time with siblings, family, or friends. You can enjoy their indoor ice rink, carnival rides, and a variety of foods and sweets. “I prefer going with my younger brother,” shares Amaja Craft’20. “There’s a ton of stuff to do that both of us enjoy despite the age gap.”

To summarize, just because you’re stuck in Chicago this winter break doesn’t mean you’re stuck in the house. Call up some friends and try any one of these popular, winter themed events together!
