Chicago’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: Why You Should Go

Gabriela Marulanda

In the 1930s, Chicago hosted its very first annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. The tradition has continued ever since, and today it includes giant helium balloons, fire twirlers, dancers, equestrian performers and many more!

The parade kicks off on November 22nd at 8:00 A.M. all the way to 11:00 A.M. If you are planning on going, make sure you get to Congress Parkway bright and early. The parade will start there then travel north to Randolph Street. Mercy Oladipo ‘19, is one of the many Chicagoans that will be attending the parade on Thanksgiving; “My family and I go every year and get there at around 7:15 to avoid the huge crowds. We love being in the front!”

If you’re wondering how exactly to get there, the CTA trains are your best bet. Get off at the Washington/Wabash or Adams/Wabash stops for the Brown, Purple, Orange, Green, or Pink Lines. The Red and Blue Line Jackson station will also get you close to where you need to be.

When asked why she was excited for the event, Kanyinsola Anifowoshe ‘19 states, “It’s going to be a beautiful day that Thursday, I heard that it’s forecasted to be in the mid 40s and sunny and to top it all off it’s free!” If you’re an early bird that is going to be front row to see this one of a kind parade, or simply someone that would rather watch from afar from their television, make sure not to miss it!
