On Saturday April 21st, the Whitney Young Girls Soccer Team played and tied University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, 1-1, for the first annual Chicago Cup Tournament. The tournament consists of 8 teams within the city; St. Ignatius, Latin, Jones, Payton, Mother McAuley, Back of the Yards, U High, and Whitney Young. The Whitney Young Dolphins beat Back of the Yards 7-1 on Thursday night, April 19th. The girls came out with the same intensity as they did against Back of Yards, Saturday morning.

Whitney Young dominated most of the possession at the very beginning of the game and throughout the first half, but due to a lack of communication on defense the ball was not cleared and resulted on a goal scored against the Dolphins. But within 15 seconds of getting a goal scored on them, the girls played a kick combination off of the kick off and sophomore, Mia Lisanti ‘20, tevened the score for the Whitney Young Dolphins. “I didn’t think it was going to go in,” she said after she scored.

The score remained the same until the final whistle blew, although the Dolphins had many opportunities to put more goals away. Coach Spero Mandakas commented, “we played well and created many great chances, but we need to continue working on finishing in the final third,” on the game.

The girls take a break from the Chicago Cup for a couple days as they finish out their conference league games against Lane Tech, on Monday, April 23rd at 4:00 pm. Make sure you’re there to support them!
