Girls Soccer Returns from Spring Break and Beats Payton 2-0

The Whitney Young Girls Soccer Team makes their return from their Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in style. On Monday April 2nd, the Whitney Young Dolphins beat the Walter Payton Grizzlies 2-0 at Rockne Stadium. While in Myrtle Beach, the girls played Myrtle Beach High School and won in penalty kicks and then they played St. James High School and lost in penalty kicks. But when they came back to the Windy City they were ready to kick some butt in their CPS conference.
Last year, the girls had an early season 1-0 loss against Payton that crushed their chances of playing in the City Championship game, so this year they were ready to attack. Audrey Howaniec ‘19 was especially ready because last year she took another loss in addition to the game. “Last year I broke my collarbone in that game, so I was ready to come out and play my hardest,” she said. She certainly did do that. The Whitney Young girls looked rough during the first 20 minutes of the start of the game but it was Audrey Howaniec who was able to monopolize on a mishap in Payton’s defense and score the first goal of the game, bringing Young out of their slump. Girls Soccer coach, Spero Mandakas, was content with the win but overall unimpressed by the soccer played by the team as a whole. “Our energy was just not there” he said and went on to talk about how there’s a lot of room for improvement with this year’s team.
Make sure you go and support your Whitney Young Girls Soccer Team during the rest of their season and watch them rule their conference!
