Tips for Studying for Finals

Next week, January 30th- February 1st, is a scary time for students. It is a time to determine whether all the hard work from this semester has paid off. It is a time to see if that 91% in Calculus drops to a B. It is the dreaded Finals week here at Whitney Young.

Trying to retain a semester’s worth of information in a couple days is a tough task to tackle, but many fellow Whitney Young students provided great tips and tricks for Acing Finals. Junior, Carson Herman ‘19, shared with us some of her secrets to success for Finals, “What I do is make a bunch of flashcards and study those. It’s really helpful for English or a Social Science class.” Flashcards was a common answer when students were asked how they study but also many people mentioned how they disliked flashcards like, Asia Locke ‘18. Asia said, “flashcards are tedious and a waste of time, even Quizlet is (online flashcards). For me, I just take notes the whole semester on my laptop and I compile them together and make my own study guide,” which sounds like a great idea but is not the most helpful thing for the students who haven’t been taking notes online this first semester.

Many students suggested websites like Khan Academy, to study for Math and Science. A couple more kids even said that going onto Youtube and watching Crash Course videos of John Green and his brother Hank explain everything regarding Politics, History and Science, really helps them.

With so much access to different study tools online and even “old fashioned methods,” like making note cards, students have endless opportunities to study their hearts out. The difficult part is actually doing it. Plan out a time in which you’re going to study for, grab your textbook, your laptop, your notes, and maybe some friends if you learn best that way. Start hitting the books everyone, Finals are fast approaching and we all want that A.
