Is dance a sport?

Brooke Gist

The definition of a dancer is a person who is trained to move his/her body rhythmically. The key word in that sentence is trained. This brings up the question of “is dance a sport?” This topic is very controversial because many believe that dance is an art form and cannot be considered as a sport. Words that come to mind when thinking  of a sport are “touchdown,” “homerun,” and “box out”. One does not usually think of the terms “plie” or “triple” or “switch kick.” This is because of the continual debate whether dance should be considered a sport or as art.  In my opinion, it is both. Guys & Dolls member Nyla David ‘19 says, “The physical obstacles dancers have to go through while dancing as well as the performance and fitness aspect of dance is just as important as skill development that is required in a sport such as basketball.” A dancer is also an athlete and uses her athletic abilities that are used in more popular and recognized sports to enhance their art form and performance. A dancer has to be in exceptional physical condition, compete in competitions, follow rules, have discipline, use the right equipment, and practice on a regular basis just like a basketball or football player. Although a dancer’s main priority is not to play in games with teammates, there is no other explanation why dancers are not considered athletes. Dancers should be considered athletes as it requires the physical strength, endurance, stamina, and drive just as much as recognized athletes who play sports do.
