Most Offensive Halloween Costumes

Joshua Schoonmaker

Halloween is a time of candy, spooks, and decorations. However, the most notable and exciting tradition surrounding October 31st is dressing up in costumes. While some people like to throw on any old bum outfit, and others use the day as an excuse to dawn their sexiest attire, there are some costumes on the market that will inevitably offend or upset a person or group of people. Whether the purpose is to offend or to avoid offending, below is a comprised list of the five outfits most likely to upset someone:

  1. Random Asian Garb

Sure, being a rice farmer or rocking a conical hat is guaranteed to tick someone off, but it’s all been done before and is a bit too obvious. A more subtle and effective way to annoy someone is to throw on anything that looks remotely Asian, according to Kelli Bazzell, ‘18. “Don’t just take advantage of other cultures because it looks nice,” she suggests. Many question whether or not everyone flaunting the costumes are even aware what the characters translate too. In any case, it’s probably a safer bet to just come to school as a roll of sushi.

  1. Cats

This may come as a shock to some, as many people love to show up to parties with ears and a tail. However, many fail to recall that cats were once worshipped in ancient Egypt. Thus it is incredibly insensitive to normalize cats as some silly costume, insulting the culture of ancient Egyptians who saw cats as a symbol of grace.

  1. A Mexican

It is all too often we see someone throw on a sombrero and completely disregard all the suffering brown people underwent in order to invent the sombrero and mass produce it. And any pun involving the name “Juan” is completely unacceptable and should be considered an unspeakable offense to those with that name. In a time where a wall is being constructed between the United States and Mexico, it’s astounding the audacity somejuan would have to have to lack any courtesy or sensitivity.

  1. Pandas

Now if you’re like any common person, you might wonder what on earth could be wrong with dressing as an adorable fluffy panda. However, upon putting on the PC glasses, it becomes obvious where the issue lies. Pandas are black, white, and Asian all at the same time, and while the poor animals cannot help but be born into a place where they don’t understand that the way they look is inherently sinful, this does not excuse their fur color nor does it pardon anyone imitating it. To dress as a panda is to combine three colors and thus appropriate them without recognizing their strengths on their own, and may even be considered “whitewashing” to some.

  1. Moana

Thanks to Cosmopolitan, we can all be aware that any white person who dresses as the main character of the popular Disney Film Moana has committed a most egregious crime and must immediately correct their ignorant behavior. It matters not how much they may have appreciated the film even specifically for its inclusion of a person of color as the main character, they must NOT dress like her.
