A book nerd’s paradise, Goodreads is the perfect networking site to connect with others who share a love for reading. As advertised by the website, Goodreads is the perfect way to “Meet your next favorite book.” Tikal Rivera ’17, a user of Goodreads said: “It’s pretty convenient! It’s just nice to be able to find a bunch of books you might get interested in, and it’s pretty easy to use.” Boasting 55 million members, Goodreads was launched in 2007, and was later purchased by Amazon in 2013. Goodreads members create their own online library, where they can store all of the books that they have read on “shelves,” as well as save any books that they want to read in the future. Users can rate and reviews books, and even keep track of their yearly reading challenges (readers set a goal of the amount of books that they want to read by the end of that year). According to an article for the new york times, Goodreads is also host to roughly 20,000 organically occurring online book clubs for every preference — from people interested in only Proust to those who prefer history and Tudor-period fiction.” Members can also recommend books to others, or choose a book from a list of recommendations that Goodreads generates for each user. Although she has never used Goodreads before, Sophie Bjertnæs, a student from Norway, believes that Goodreads: “sounds like a great way to keep track of the books that I’ve read.” Goodreads is also available as a free app for both Apple and Android phones.
