WY winter sports

The end of the first quarter marks not only grade reports and No-School November, but it also represents one of the most anticipated times of the school year: the start of winter sports at WY. This year, many winter programs look to claim their prominence of yesteryears and none are more eager than our boys and girls basketball teams.
Boys basketball hopes to come together to compete for a chance in the city championship and potentially even state playoffs. Led by power forward Lucas Williamson ‘17 and point guard Xavier Castaneda ‘18, they are looking to take back the city title they won in 2014. Williamson, the team’s captain, said they are “all extremely excited and eager to get back on the court.” In order to gain back this elusive throne, they have to face the stiff competition standing in their way. Teams such as Simeon, Curie, and Kenwood will not go down easily.
Upcoming dates for large tournaments include their head-to-head matchup with Kenwood Academy at the well-known Chicago Elite Classic, which will be their season opener on Dec. 3. Guard Derrick Faulkner ‘17 said that the team is “excited to get their first win.” Clearly, confidence levels are high and players are anxious to get back into the grind.
Girls basketball is looking to defend their city title as well, in addition to making another impressive state run this year. Guard Sloane Kistinger ‘17 expressed her feelings on this season. “We are a young team this year,” she said, “but we have been working hard all throughout the off-season and I’m confident that we have a legitimate shot in the city and state tournaments.” Plus, with Corryne Irvin, the two-time state champion coach, girls basketball will most likely be favored to make it far once again. The girls will play Raby in their home opener in just a few weeks.
As the seasons turn and snow begins to fall, the WY basketball teams are heating up with animation and anticipation, it’s sure to be a thrilling next few months. Students can’t wait to see the outcome of this season.
