The Chicago Cubs have won the World Series. Read that line again. Now one more time. It really happened. The most sought after goal that all Cubs fans could have only dreamed of has finally been reached after a long 108 years.
I have been a Cubs fan my entire life. Countless times I have been asked, “How can you continue to support mediocrity, or be associated with losing?” My answer to that is the same as many other loyal fans — “it’s complicated.” Yes, the Cubs may not have been all that in the not so distant past, but this year was different. This year, our year, we proved them wrong.
As a die-hard Cubs fan since a young age, I can honestly state that what the Cubs brought home that night was more than a just a trophy. Rather it was an experience that had been desired by so many fans before me. The road was tough, paved with angst, anguish, and heartache, yet we persevered. Nov. 2, the night of the World Series win, will forever be remembered in my heart and the heart of the city. It became a day for fans to remember lost loved ones who had spent their entire lives worshiping the “Lovable Losers” and a day for parents to experience with their kids a life changing event. Cubs fans can finally sleep with ease and smiles on their faces.
The value in that game simply cannot be counted as another tick in the “W” column for this historic team. This time, the value is immeasurable. No matter how many World Series trophies the Cubs may bring home in the future, it will never compare to this victory. It is forever ingrained into our memories. As the beloved first baseman Anthony Rizzo said, “It’s bigger than us.” The true value and impact of this event may even be felt for years to come. It has truly never felt so good to be a Cubs fan.
