It Finally Happened…Cubs Win!

CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN! As Wrigley’s marquee stood facing a mass overflowing the streets of Wrigleyville, the set of words that flashed were some even the oldest people in the crowd couldn’t claim to have seen before. WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS. An achievement that had taken as long as 108 years to cultivate had finally bloomed Wednesday night after a throw to first left a team in pure jubilation for what seemed like the very first time. For many, this Game 7 of the World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians will go down as one of the greatest to have been played. The very first at bat saw Dexter Fowler blast a solo home-run into the backfield giving the Cubs the edge to start the game. But for 10 innings, the two teams clashed, throwing and swinging with the bat like the top teams they had proven to be throughout the year. The importance of a strong bullpen was no surprise though, as Justin Schwartz ‘20 said earlier in the week, “I think that with the right pitching they can win the World Series,” said earlier this week. And Justin was absolutely correct about this. The pitching was a key factor contributing the Cub’s win. Before the series began, lifelong Cubby fan Sloane Kistinger ‘17 had a hopeful take on the two teams as she expressed the excitement that comes along with the two playing for the coveted Commissioner’s Trophy. “We’re both young teams who have had a World Series drought for a while. It should be an exciting series. A sure battle to the finish,” said Kistinger when asked what she was most looking forward to in this series battle. It sure was an exciting battle to the finish for the Cubs and Indians playing all the way until Game 7. The Cubs had given us a lot to stress over these last couple of weeks and for fans like Clayton Mendez ‘18 all that they’re happy about is the fact that the journey to becoming World Champs is finally complete. After winning the World Series in dramatic fashion, Mendez sounded ecstatic saying, “I’m happy, I’m excited, this gives me great pride knowing that after a long wait the North Side Cubbies came out on top.”
