Girls Swimming: The Quest for City

Emma Purcell and Anna Dennis

After placing 3rd in the city last year, the girls swim team is back and ready to take home a city championship. The team is young, with more freshman than upperclassman combined, and hopeful for this season. The girls have already set the tone by defeating their biggest rival, Lane Tech, in a dual meet in September. “I would say Lane Tech and Northside are our biggest competition so beating Lane early in the season was a huge victory,” said captain Claire Fridkin ‘17.

Some exciting new additions to the team include Jalen Lewis ‘19, a transfer student from Kenwood, Lauren Azar ‘20, and Julia Macellaio ‘20, a diver. Some other notable returning swimmers include, Lillian Hua ‘17, who is back from her year abroad in Germany, Elizabeth Shumaker ‘18, and Annika Chrobak-Prince ‘19. In addition, diver Lindsey Sonnefeldt ‘18 is back at full speed after recovering from an ACL injury last season.

The team still has a lot of wins to look forward to in the next couple weeks, and can be expected to break numerous school records, given they broke all but three last season. Be sure to cheer them to victory at the CPS City Relays, happening on October 23rd at the WY pool, and stop by their Senior Night against Latin on October 28th. “The end of the season looks very promising,” says Fridkin. “This could be our first city champion

ship in 15 years”.
