Though many of WY’s sports teams are known for their unparalleled success year after year, there are few teams that compare to the Girls Basketball team. Last Sunday afternoon, the Lady Dolphins picked up their eighth straight City Championship title. Although only ranked as the fifth best team in the city going into the championship game, defeating Morgan Park High School (the number one seed in the tournament) seemed to be easy work for the Lady Dolphins.

Coming off a win against the Marshall High School Commodores, the Dolphins started out firing on all cylinders. Their senior leaders, Kiara Lewis ‘16 and Isabelle Spingola ‘16, played consistent throughout the entire game. Lewis finished with 37 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. She controlled the game on the defensive end and capitalized on the  offensive opportunities given to her. Spingola racked up seven points and eight rebounds.  Additionally, Spingola made two big threes  that kept the momentum in  WY’s favor and played great defense on Morgan Park High School’s leading scorer, Destiny Harden ‘17.

The Dolphins’ bench was a huge help and added extra scoring options. Also, the lack of a third and fourth consistent scorer has been one of the few things holding the Dolphins back and this game they had solid contributions from Adrienne Truitt ‘17 . Lewis, who takes on a lot of the scoring load gave recognition to her teammates, especially how her bench executed their role, “I thought my teammates played well and our bench played phenomenal, they did a great job of finding me and attacking the rim.”

Early in the season Forward Danyelle Williams ‘17 was dreaming of a city title. After the Puerto Rico trip she said, “The goal is to bring home a city and state championship… ” Though the Lady Dolphins may have jumped over this hurdle it is time for them to get through the state playoffs.  Though the Lady Dolphins have some tough competition ahead of them, likely including top ranked teams like Proviso East, Simeon, or Homewood-Flossmoor, Lewis is confident in her team’s abilities, “We have all the pieces on our team we need to win and we are going to be a tough team to beat.”  So far it looks as though the Lady Dolphins are meeting  their early season goals.   Let’s hope these Dolphins can follow last year’s team’s success and bring home another state championship.
