WY Poms Squad starts the competition season out strong

The Whitney Young Poms Squad is one of the most well known and top favorites throughout the city of Chicago and neighboring suburbs. The team always has uniquely themed Hip Hop routines; in the 2015 season it was race cars and the 2016 season features a basketball motif. The City-Championship on December 12th marked the beginning of the competition season for Poms. When asked how the team is doing, Cameron Cox, ‘17 replied, “Poms started out with a rocky beginning at city, but we did really well at the IHSA competition.” What Cameron considered a rocky start, the rest of the school considers phenomenal. The team put in the work and came home with the second place title, losing only to Kenwood High School.

On January 9, the WY Poms Squad participated in the Illinois High School Association Regional Competition. This second competition was more competitive than City because rather than only competing against other teams in the Hip Hop division, all sections of Poms compete against each other. In the IHSA Regionals, WY finished third. Tyler Spivey ‘16 says, “Our competitive season is very stressful and time consuming, but it’s super rewarding when we get to perform and show all our hard work!” WY Poms has been working tirelessly to perfect their performance for the IHSA Sectionals. If they win that, it would secure them a place in the IHSA State competition. Make sure to come out and support the team, and maybe learn some new dance moves in the process!
