When Will the Strike End?

Lori Lightfoot has only been the mayor for six months, promising that a CTU strike will not occur while shes mayor. This was not true. The Chicago Teachers Union, or CTU, have been striking for the past five days, ever since Thursday, and will now continue to Tuesday. 1987 was the CTU’s longest strike in history, which was nineteen days. How long will this strike be this time? “It’ll probably last for two more days,” says Michelle Keung, ‘21. That is a whole week of school being canceled for CPS students due to the strike.

The Chicago Teachers Union is demanding for having at least one nurse in every school. Samantha Chen, ‘22, who does not even attend a CPS school stated, “I know they want smaller classes and I think that’s dumb.” There are a lot of mixed opinions on what the CTU is asking for.

One thing is for sure right now, that it will be hard for Lori Lightfoot to negotiate a contract that is up to par for what the CTU is demanding. “They already got $1 billion last year. Where did it all go,” said Rogelio Renteria, ‘20? Lightfoot has stated that the city has given everything they can offer and that they have no more money.

The real question now is, what contract deal will the CTU finally agree with, despite the city not having any more money?
