Last Friday, May 17th, 2019, Whitney Young Girls Soccer won their regional championship game. However, this was not just an ordinary win. This game was the first state game won in over 5 years and the first regional championship in close to 10 years. Due to a goal scored by Audrey Howaniec, assisted by Mia Lisanti, they won 1-0 against Glenbard East. The Rams have a record of 17-5 which shows that they were not just a team we could automatically count out. The girls had to fight hard until the very end of the game. Manager Fernanda Sousa ‘19 says “I’m so proud of the team. It was against the home team who had won that regional for the last 4 years so we were major underdogs.” Cameron Williams ‘20, who attended the match, said: “It was such a fun game to watch and that’s coming from one who does not watch soccer that much.” Nadia Swansey ‘22, who also attended the game, said “I was not expecting to enjoy the game as much as I did. I’m so glad that I went.” The girls’ soccer team is still going strong. They won their game last against York 2-0 and they play for the Sectional Championship Saturday, May 25th, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. The team would love to see as many of you there as possible.
