Guys and Dolls: Up Close & Personal 2019 Show Review

Skylar Mooyoung, Writer

This past Friday, I attended the annual Guys and Dolls: Up Close & Personal show and was truly blown away. The show opened up and closed with pieces choreographed by seniors Kristin Reid and Bella Muscarello respectively. Both pieces were equally gorgeous and represented the senior class well. Throughout the show, the lights were brought up so that audience members could browse their programs and discuss the pieces with their peers. I think that including these momentary pauses keep the audience engaged and attentive. Khloe Wright ‘21 said, “I loved the little breaks throughout the show as they gave me an opportunity to evaluate and think about what I just saw.” As the show continued, we saw a variety of pieces ranging from contemporary to pieces that had more of a hip hop feel. One of my favorite pieces was the solo choreographed and danced by senior Kristin Reid. Nariya Douglas ‘19 says, “This was one of the best pieces in the show by far. Bravo, Kristin!” At the end of the show, the Guys and Dolls Dance Company closes with their signature piece, Rapt. I look forward to this piece every year because it serves as an anchor in the show. The pieces and the dancers change every year but Rapt is always a classic. Erin Lohman ‘20 said, “I love seeing Rapt and I look forward to it every year.” My only critique of the show is that I wish there was more time when the lights came up to discuss the pieces. I started really in depth conversations and I feel like they were often cut short. Overall, the show was fantastic and I loved it. Great job, Guys and Dolls!
