Over winter break on January 3, 2019, Lifetime premiered a six part docuseries entitled, Surviving R. Kelly. The docuseries follows the story of R&B legend Robert Kelly’s life and highlights his numerous sexual scandals. Throughout the six episodes, the audience is told a variety of stories from the perspective of Kelly’s victims. While the women each have individual stories, they all seem to follow a pattern. Kelly pursues girls often pubescent and underaged that have big dreams and are weak minded. Alicia Bridges ‘19 says, “I feel bad for the girls R. Kelly is holding captive. There is a greater psychological issue at hand. A lot of the women are not able to leave because of their own restrictions.” He did not seem as concerned with their physical appearance as their mental state. If R. Kelly believed he could control, maninuplate and abuse a girl that was his prey. Kelly was also exposed for running a sex cult and still having these girls in his possession. The biggest issue people had with Kelly’s actions was the fact that most of the girls he went after were under the age of 18. Gabrielle Crapps ‘22 said, “The most disturbing part is that the girls R. Kelly wants are my age. This really put things into perspective for me. He is disgusting.” Most This helped him gain the labels of “pedophile”  and “child molester”. The docuseries overall was well received and broke records for Lifetime. The premiere episodes had 1.9 million viewers. Nandi Myhand ‘21 said, “I did not miss a single episode. I watched all six parts. R. Kelly is truly an evil human being.” The docuseries did a great job exposing R. Kelly for his horrific and vile acts and has even started progress in repercussions for his actions. As of recently his studio is supposed to be investigated. Surviving R. Kelly can be watched on Lifetime’s website along with cable TV.
