How To Make A Quality Video

Isabel Shanahan

You would think that I am writing this so you, the reader, would know how to make a good video. I am actually writing it to remind myself how to go about it. Many people have writers block, but lately I’ve been having video block. So these are the steps to help you and myself create a quality video.

  1. Think about what excites you, what you would want to see if someone else was creating a video. Whether you wish someone would make you laugh or cry, think about the feeling or emotion you wish to express in your video. When Angel Silva ‘18 was creating Mr. Bot, he said, “I just let my creativity flow and came up with a really cool concept.”
  2. Take that feeling and put it on paper. There are no bad ideas, well no really bad ideas, so you should write down whatever comes to mind. (I have a journal I keep with me that I can pull out whenever I think of a new video.
  3. Start conceptualizing the video, the logistics, how you are going to make something written on a piece of paper into a moving picture.
  4. Put together a crew that you know you can count on and excel in their designated job. Carolina Villanueva ‘18 is the best in the business when it comes to camera work and she says, “you aren’t born good at a trade, you have to work at it in order to get good.”
  5. Look for cool filming locations that are interesting to the eye.
  6. Film the video and make sure that you spend your time in the field. Five extra minutes filming could could decrease your amount of editing time by an hour.
  7. Adapt to the problems you find because almost no video is created exactly how it was imagined.
  8. When you’re editing really take your time and put in hard work so the final result is something you are proud of.

Even if you are an excellent filmmaker, it is important to be reminded how a quality video is made. I know I often forget.
