Surf’s Up is one of the greatest movies of our generation. The animated mockumentary debuted in 2007 and has been one of the most cherished films in America in the ten years that has followed. Production began in 2002 and brought together some of the world’s greatest voice actors, including Shia LeBeouf and Zooey Deschanel. The film was directed by Ash Brannon and Chris Buck, and written by a team of writers including Chris. The film’s accolades include being nominated for best animated feature in the 2008 Oscars, which it unfairly lost to Ratatouille.

The film is an animated mockumentary that follows aspiring penguin surfer Cody Maverick (Shia LeBeouf). Cody lives in the remote antarctic village of Shiverpool and is the only surfer in his small fishing community. One day a talent scout comes to the village in search of participants for the Big Z Memorial Surf competition and Cody jumps at the opportunity. Seeing as the deceased surf legend, Big Z, is his idol it only makes sense that Cody be part of the competition. The rest of the movie is filled with new formed friendships, competition, love, and a lesson on how to have fun.

The movie is a must see. It is perfect for all ages and anyone can learn from the movie’s central message. The animation is stunning and the laid back mockumentary style is hilarious. Quincy Hirt, president of the senior class, says, “Surf’s Up is an instant classic, truly beautiful.”The surf competition accurately depicts surf culture even though it is only competed in by fun loving penguins. Ryan Rosen, surfing fan, says “Surf’s Up is totally what other surfers are like, it’s hilarious.” Olivia Rest, movie lover, says, “It is the best movie I have seen in a while, it brought me to tears.” Cody Maverick gives a fun filled and exciting lesson on what it really means to be a winner and how to enjoy life.
