Pot Holes of Chicago

Megan Riordan

The streets of Chicago are known for the big foot size potholes and rocky terrain that hurts the transmission. You go outside today and you can find potholes everywhere. You pull into the student parking lot of off Van Buren and you are instantly hit with potholes and gravel roads. The entryway should be smooth so cars can get in easier. Nick Johnson ’20 drives to school almost everyday and he says,” I know that the roads of Chicago are bad. But the entry to the student parking lot is some of the worst roads I’ve driven on”.

Many students believe that over the summer, the school should have spent the money to fix the parking lot. Daniel Lopez ‘21 drives a stick shift truck and it’s already hard enough driving his car in the typical conditions of Chicago but he says, “ Every time I pull into the parking lot i’m afraid that my transmission is gonna die. My truck is twenty years old. Its all I have and I don’t want my car to get damaged.” We all feel the same pain as Lopez as many streets in Chicago are getting fixed. However, not fast enough.

To all the students that drive to school to all have their thoughts on the parking lot. Many times its too full of students who don’t have a pass, trying to get to school early so you get a spot closest to the door, and most of all trying not to get a dent. dents can come from accidentally bumping in the cars or from rocks that come flying up from the debris of the potholes. Many students are worried that the pot holes will cost some serious damage to their car. For many their car is also the family car, which can be taken on road trips or family outings. Noah Mckay’20 drives to school and he said, “ I like driving to school. It’s easier and faster than taking the train. But I feel at times I get cheated out of my ninety dollars I pay for that spot. I understand if it’s another way for the school to earn money but where is that money going towards and why isn’t the checking of cars with stickers more serious?” we all wonder if and when anyone is gonna get apprehended for driving without the sticker or what will they do to the potholes in our lots and surrounding streets. But we do know that if you want to drive anywhere in chicago then you better be safe.
