Class Officers

Patrick Moran

This past week elections for senior class office were held here at Whitney Young. There were four spots up for grabs, President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Last Wednesday in Long Division candidates delivered speeches in the theater. James Rockey ‘20, former presidential candidate, now class president, told us that he is “so excited to be the new class president” and looks “forward to making this year the best year ever.” The rest of your class officers are as follows, Vice President Michaela Zollicoffer, Secretary Alondra Lozano, and Treasurer Audrey Erickson.

The one point that stands out to me as a little strange is that all of the officers were in the Academic Center. This isn’t a bad thing per se, but this might dissuade others from running in the future when they see a set of officers exclusively from the Academic Center.

The job that the class officers play consists of working with Ms. El-Amin to make sure that our graduating year goes as smoothly as possible. Class officers help with prom, the luncheon, and the graduation ceremony. The class officers also help to put together statements and letters to go into to the yearbook. This year the elections happened quite a bit later in the year. So late, in fact, that the election was after early decision and early action deadlines. This means candidates could not put on their early applications that they were class officers. This shows that the officers this year are doing it for more than just the props on their college apps. The hope is that this will lead to a successful and enjoyable senior year and graduation.
