As we bring the first quarter and fall sports come to a close this year, there are still extremely exciting sporting events and occasions going on throughout the Whitney Young community. Both the bowling season and the swimming season are getting ready to begin as well as National Signing Day for athletes having taken place last Wednesday, November 13th! National Signing Day is the first day where student athletes may validly sign their letters of intent to verify their commitments to institutions. When asked about what signing day means to him, Casey Coates ‘20, a 4 year varsity baseball player to attend Morehouse College, stated “It just feels amazing to be recognized by the school for the hard work I’ve put in. All of us athletes, all 17 of us, have dedicated blood sweat and tears into our crafts to be afforded the opportunity to play at the next level.” Thora Hornewer ‘20, a rower to attend the University of Washington, said “Its really cool to be recognized for your efforts. Especially what with Whitney Young not having a team for my sport, it’s great that they acknowledge how much athletes put into their craft even outside of school.” J’Shawn Taylor ‘20, also a baseball player, to attend St. Vincent College, said “It’s a great event for us athletes to have ourselves and the people who have helped us get to where we are today be recognized by the school, which has also put us in a position to succeed.” Seventeen athletes signed for several different sports, including but not limited to baseball, softball, basketball, track and field, volleyball, and rowing. Whitney Young’s athletes are still striving for higher goals and continue to try to be an example of the championship culture!
