Picket Lines Approach, Maybe

Mayor Lori Lightfoot has recently been elected and gone into office, and she has already got a lot on her table. Lightfoot is bargaining with the Chicago Teachers Union and their wants for higher pay, smaller class size and more staff members. Negotiations have been going on for a while now, and with no agreement yet, a teachers strike looks imminent. The CTU went on strike seven years ago for seven total days leaving 350,000 students with no school for a week. With the possibility of another strike on the way, I asked some students their thoughts on the possible strike. “I think it would be cool because we get to miss school. It would suck for the teachers because they have to strike to get their fair wages but I would be fine with missing school,” said Neil Rockey ‘22. “I remember I was in 4th grade during the first strike, and it was nice to miss school, but the days get added on at the end of the year which is sad,” said Kimmy Vu-Smith ‘21. All kids love to miss school, and I’m sure that is what most of us think about when we talk about a strike, but we must also think about our teachers and what they’re going through. “I feel like the teachers have every right to strike if they feel like they are being mistreated,” said Jose Rivera ‘21. No matter what ends up happening though, I know that students at Whitney Young and across CPS will be in support of our teachers, fighting for their rights.
