Legalization of Cannabis?

Legalization of recreational marijuana in the United States, effects on the teenage population in the US? Currently medical marijuana is legal in 30 US states for those who have certain medical conditions and an approved cannabis card. Eight of those states have also legalized recreational use of marijuana, Illinois not included. They are discussing possibly expanding that list, but a constant conflict arises: the effect that it would have on this generation.

Does it increase or decrease teenage usage? Those who are pro-legalization believe that it will reduce crime and harm on the street. They say that the criminalization of marijuana not only sponsors violence and corruption but sparks young people’s interest in the drug. Fernanda Rio ‘19, believes that “people do it sometimes just because it is illegal so if it were to be legalized than it wouldn’t become a gateway crime”. On on hand, those who are con-legalization disagrees, and believes that it will in fact increase teenage usage since they would have easier access. They deduce that it would overall harm teenagers mentally and physically since their brains are not fully developed yet.
