Cubs Player Hit In The Head By Baseball and Forced to Leave Game

On Sunday April 23rd, 2018, at the Cubs vs the Colorado Rockies game at Coors Field, Kris Bryant was hit in the head by German Marquez’s wild pitch. He was immediately escorted from the game and is still being further evaluated, however, he thankfully seems to have walked away from the incident with only a small laceration above his eye (due to his sunglasses) and no concussion. His departure was followed up by the ejection of Cubs coaches Andy Haines and Chili Davis as they were yelling too much from the team’s dugout. The pitcher, German Marquez, remained in the game although he was reported to have been shaken by the incident.

The way the ball hit his head itself was pretty interesting. Kris Bryant was just barely able to react to the pitch enough to slightly dodge his head away. This resulted in what seemed to be the ball just grazing the front of his face, which was protected by his gear. His helmet literally did a whole 360 in the air before it landed back on the player’s head and is somewhat reminiscent of Looney Toons cartoon (or maybe that’s just me).

Here are some Whitney Young reactionss to the event:

Emily H. ‘22 “I mean, I don’t really watch baseball, but I hope he’s okay.”

Andrew F. ‘20  added, “Yeah, I was watching the game when it happened! I was shocked at first but I think he’ll be alright.”

Hopefully Bryant will be back in shape soon if the Cubs want to hold on to their chances to making it to the World Series!
