New ID rule

When the Whitney Young weekly came out on Sunday, April 8th, students found out that the school would be enforcing a new rule about identification starting Monday. The announcement read, “Effective immediately, all students and staff members must wear their current school ID on a lanyard while in the building.  Students must show their current ID card upon entry into the school (mobile ID is no longer accepted when entering the building)… Starting Monday, April 16 students who do not wear their ID card will be disciplined.”

There are two sides to this new development with the school.

On one hand, students are either indifferent about the situation or even excited about it. One student, Ellie Odom (’19) says she is “EXCITED about the lanyards because I am going to buy 20 different ones for each outfit and it offers a new opportunity for me to accessorize and express myself.” And students who are concerned for their school safety are open to more security through the strict enforcement of identification.

On the other hand, many students think the idea is pointless and they are not looking forward to wearing the ID’s. Gabe Feldman (’18) brings up an interesting point in saying, “If an unidentified person is in the school, at that point, it may already be too late.” There is also the fact that temporary ID’s can be bought by anybody (at least in past years) and although the recent emphasis on not letting anyone through any door that is not the main door, students often let their friends and alike in anyways.

So what’s your take? Is wearing ID’s unavailing or is it going to help keep the school safer?
