School Gun Control

Over the past years, there have been multiple incidents of a student, or outsider coming into the school and threatening the lives of many children, staff, and teachers. While there are many different prospects on why and how these disasters occur, lots of individuals, as well as our president, are starting to weigh in on how we could solve the issue and try to put an end to it for good. They vary from person to person, but the most controversial topic right now is on whether or not we should try to resolve this by arming teachers with guns. According to President Trump, if more teachers were armed, then whenever an issue like this broke out, the teachers would be able to basically serve as first responders and deal with the issue from there. He says, “History shows that a school shooting lasts on average 3 minutes. It takes police and first responders approximately 5-8 minutes to get to the scene of the crime. Highly trained, gun adept teachers would be able to solve the problem instantly, before police arrive.” Many are saying this just creates more problems, and it seems like we are just trying to aid violence with more violence, which doesn’t help anything. Karina Santiago, ‘19 says, “All we are trying to do is create a safer environment for students to come and learn in. If they don’t feel safe there, it can eventually start to hinder their learning.” Instead of adding more guns to the equation, the more reasonable solution would be to fix the underlying issue of what’s causing these incidents to begin with. Such as treating students that exhibit unusual and violent aggressive behaviors with therapy and counseling so that nothing gets out of hand. In addition to that, putting stricter gun laws into place will hopefully help prevent things like this happening in the future, because not just anyone will be able to get a hold of a semi automatic assault rifle that has the power to kill many people within just minutes.
