Florida School Shooting

Recently, on February 15th, a young man by the name of Nikolas Cruz was the suspect of a school shooting at a high school in Florida named Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Nikolas Cruz has been put into custody and is already charged for killing at least 17 students and staff of the Douglas High School.

 

According to the New York Times,“ Mr. Cruz faces 17 counts of premeditated murder, one for each of those killed. He is being held without bond at the main Broward County jail, where he has been placed on suicide watch, according to Gordon Weekes, the county’s chief assistant public defender. The AR-15 rifle used in the attack was bought legally in 2017 at Sunrise Tactical Supply in Florida, officials said.”

 

Situations like these have been brought to the public attention numerous times in the recent history. This one of the the highest number of killings ever. . Not only has it brought attention to subject of school shooting but school safety in general. Events such as this tend to make people fear for their school or place of business. Also this situation brings attention to gun violence and gun laws in general. Below are some comments from Whitney Young Students:

Julie Jimenez ‘18 “This makes me concerned for our school safety because I wonder what if this happens at our school or a school nearby.

Carmen Chan ‘18 “This is really unfair to students who are not expecting the be shot at while attending class.”
