With summer break just around the corner, many people are eager to just get out of the city and explore somewhere new. If you’re into exploring the outdoors, visiting one of the top five national parks i definitely the right thing to do.

  1. Joshua Tree National Park

Located in Southern California between the Mojave and Colorado Desert, Joshua Tree National Park is characterized by the abundant, spiky, and finger-like Joshua Trees that are native to the region. These trees can be found on hiking trails among other desert plants and rock formations throughout the park. At sunset, Keys View is the place to be. The lookout into the Coachella Valley combined with the mountainous background creates a spectacular sunset that illuminates the mountains and valley below.

  1. Everglades National Park

Located on the southern tip of Florida, Everglades National Park is a place truly unlike no other. Its makeup of mangroves, marshes, and swamps provide homes for hundreds of animal species such as the endangered leatherback turtle and West Indian manatee. Bike trails and rivers run through a large section of the park, allowing visitors to really insert themselves into the wilderness. When visiting, definitely rent kayaks/ canoes, or go on a boat tour in order to truly experience the immense biodiversity and different habitats.

  1. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Located on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, Smoky Mountain National Park is the ideal place for hiking and camping. The park is full of luscious forests, waterfalls, and hiking trails. Some of the trails are also part of the Appalachian Trail, which offered breathtaking views of the mist-covered mountains.

Located in Maine, Acadia National Park is characterized by its woodland rocky beaches and dense forests. Acadia is home to Cadillac Mountain, the highest peak on the United States’ East Coast. When visiting Acadia, go to the Mount Desert Island for amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Located in northern Colorado, the Rocky Mountains encompass the Continental Divide and is home to a variety of different animals. When on Trail Ridge Road and Old Fall River Road, you’ll be able to experience the different ecosystems ranging from mountains and forests, to the alpine tundra. Star gazing is an extremely popular activity at night that everyone should participate in.
