App Review: Yelp

Iris Postma

How many times have you been in a position where you’re hungry but in unfamiliar turf and don’t really know where to go out to eat? Luckily, Yelp is an easy solution to this frequent problem. Yelp is an app and website that can be used to find restaurants, as well as other attractions. The app, available for iPhone and Android, is most useful because it can be used on the go. Location services can be enabled to show you what is closest, dollar signs are used to demonstrate price level, and you can read reviews and look at menus through the app. Yelp is very helpful when in unfamiliar turf-“Yelp was a lifesaver when my friends and I were in New York City! We found some true gems through it!” says Rachel Weaver, ‘17 and an avid Yelper. You can also toggle the filters so that only restaurants within a certain distance or price range will show up, and if you’re searching for a specific type of food you can look that up as well.  Additionally, Yelp can be used as somewhat of a social media- think Facebook but just for food. App store reviewer Av’sMusic says “The social experience of it is cool, finding new spots that’ve been reviewed and places bookmarked by friends. Yelp has also benefitted Sidney Madden, ‘17, who says “I once went to a really bad restaurant, and when I wrote a bad review on Yelp, they offered me a refund for the bad service!” Yelp may not be GrubHub, as you cannot use it to order it out, but it is an incredible tool for finding places near you, wherever you may be.
