What Can You Do To Reduce Stress During Your College Application Process?

As most of us know, applying to colleges can be very stressful. It takes time and patience that we sometimes just don’t have. It is important to not lose yourself in such a hectic time. Here are some ways to stay grounded through it all. 

1. Journaling

Journaling is a great way to let out your frustrations and get your brain flowing again. You can write about how you’re feeling or simply write about things you enjoy. There’s no limit for what you can write about to clear your mind. Give it a try! 

    2. Have Some ‘Me Time’

Taking a step back to focus on yourself and your mental health is one of the best things you can do for yourself. You should not be worried 24/7. It is not good for you. If things get too hectic in your life, take a step back and focus on you. Focus on calming yourself down and relaxing. Self care is very important and you should take the time to focus on it.


    3. Indulge in Your Hobbies

If you’re feeling stressed, take a timeout. It’s okay to press pause and take time to have some fun. Indulge in your hobbies. Take your mind off of life for a while. Drake ´19, says, “Taking a break to watch your favorite show or YouTube videos is extremely helpful as it can take your mind off of the stressful task at hand and lift your spirits altogether.” Lift your spirits, have a little fun, take a break.  

    4. Take a Walk Outside

Taking a walk outside can be so refreshing. It’s a quick and easy way to reset your mind. Kelis ´20, says, “Walking outside is a great way to get vitamin D. You can get fresh air and release much needed endorphins. while walking, you can also take in scenery around you and appreciate life more.” If life gets too hectic, take a walk outside, slow down, and appreciate everything around you. It helps you feel at peace. 

    5. Listen to Music

If you want to escape reality for a second without moving a muscle, turn on some music. You can close your eyes and forget all of your worries. Or, you could play your favorite song or artist. You can play music to match the way you feel or something to boost your mood. You can listen on Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, or any platform your heart desires. The possibilities are endless. Gelisa ´21, says,  “Listening to music helps because it clears my mind and makes me forget about all of the bad things that are happening. It’s an escape.” It helps in so many ways. 

    6. Eat and Fuel Your Brain

It is very easy to get so busy that you forget to eat. That is not good for you at all. Many studies show that eating can affect your mood and your ability to focus. Increased stress can elevate your blood pressure levels and eating can lower it. Eating and staying hydrated keeps your brain sharp. Go grab a bite to eat when you can!

    7. Set Up A Schedule to Stay on Track 

This is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Set up a schedule so you know what will happen and when it will happen. Write things down so you are never surprised when something is due. Planning things out will save you from having to cram things in at the last minute. Save yourself from the extra stress, get an agenda or something you can organize everything you have to do in. It doesn’t have to be a plan for every single second of the day. Leave time for yourself to take breaks. Balance time for work and play. 

Find what works for you. Don’t be afraid to try different methods that help you relax. Stay grounded. Stay focused. Good luck on your college application journey!
