No More Likes

Instagram is one of the most popular social media apps ever. Their easy to use format and cute features are what makes the app so appealing. Instagram is basically your life in pictures you can be whoever you want to be on it. Every picture you post gets likes and the more people you know the more lies you get. These likes can be seen to measure popularity, for example, a B list celebrity might get 100,000 likes but someone, like Beyonce, will get millions. Likes can create a popularity contest fiasco, especially for the younger users on the app. A lot of these younger users measure the worth of their pictures and even themselves by the number of likes they get. In early November, Instagram removed likes from the app… well not completely. You can still like pictures but you can’t see how many likes another person got, and you can only see the number of likes you got on your own account. Siana Respress ‘20, “I feel indifferent to their being no likes. I think that the aesthetic of the app is a little wonky”. When you look at people’s like section you see “John Dough liked this and others” which is a little funny looking.

Question: How do you feel about not seeing likes on Instagram?

Briyanna Holmes ‘20, “ Not seeing likes is fine I don’t need validation from others”.

Simone Bernard ‘25 “not seeing likes if fine, I don’t get any so people won’t see that I barely get any”.
