Senior School Spirit

Traditionally, homecoming week is full of cheer for students of all ages. This is no different for Whitney M. Young High School. This year though, there has been talk that the school spirit has slightly dwindled, especially with the seniors. Mary Hynds ,‘20, noted, “Homecoming week was very fun and we got lots of pictures. Everyone was being super dramatic and the pep rally lacked. The dance was also not that great. The game was very wet and sad but overall it was pretty fun.” For most people, the football teams 15-14 win over Von Steuben didn’t generate as much energy as expected. Others viewed the homecoming experience differently. “School spirit has definitely increased over the years and as the days of this week progressed. The buildup was incredible and a good amount of people showed their support at the homecoming game on friday,” commented Vahan Vanderpoel, ‘20. This year, homecoming week was full of mixed opinions that created miscommunications between people in all grades. With the seniors, there were differing opinions on how to chant, shirt designs, and what to get for blackout, among other things. Ariel Guan, ‘20, stated, “it was nice to be seniors after watching the previous years. It was definitely difficult for our class to agree on decisions, but in the end it all worked out and everything turned out great.” In the end, homecoming week and the homecoming festivities were full of spirit, just not as much as expected or planned.
