College Applications and a CTU Strike?

With the November 1st Early Action deadline rapidly approaching, Whitney Young seniors can be seen writing their supplemental essays on the train, during their lunch, study hall, and even during class. College application season is already stressful enough but with a probable strike, seniors don’t know whether to be concerned or excited. A strike means more time to work on their supplementals, but it also means no trusted English teacher or Ms. Pasulka to help guide our writing process. Thankfully, Caleb Dunson ‘20 and Hyacinth White-Grey ‘20 are ahead of the game and organized a way for seniors to be matched with a Whitney Young alumni volunteer and receive feedback on their college essays in the event of a teacher’s strike.

Hyacinth White-Grey ‘20 mentioned how her and Caleb made a Google form for students and alum to fill out and through this Google form, they will be able to connect current Whitney Young seniors and Whitney Young alumni. This Google form is fast and easy to fill out and asks seniors “How much help do you anticipate needing over the next week or two weeks?” and seniors are able to choose from a little, some, or a lot, which includes brainstorming and feedback on multiple essays.

A lot of Whitney Young seniors are thankful for this service, such as Tacarra Meaux ‘20 who stated, “I’m so happy Caleb and Hya coordinated this! Since I’m applying to all of my schools by the Early Action deadline, I’m glad I’ll be able to receive help despite my teachers not being available.” Even juniors are amazed by this service; Lu Diosdado ‘21 said “I’m so glad the seniors have this option given the amount of stress they are already under. Talking to recent alums is a good way to get constructive feedback from someone who has gone through this process recently.”

So seniors, if there happens to be a strike and you want help with your college applications (especially essays!), don’t forget to fill out this link
