The Polar Vortex hit the Midwest area, including Chicago, on January 30th, 2019 and passed on February 2nd, 2019. Many Chicagoans stayed indoors to avoid the record low windchill of -55° Fahrenheit. CPS Schools were closed on January 30th and January 31st to protect students, and many businesses along the lakefront were also forcibly closed for worker protection.

While the weather has since rocketed to 30 degrees, the vortex continues to move west. Global News Journalist Maham Abedi writes, “Winter weather has settled over Western Canada after hitting central and eastern parts of the country in late January.Temperatures plummeted in parts of British Columbia and Alberta over the weekend and continued into Monday.”

Concerned students assign blame to the lack of awareness surrounding climate change and global warming. “Global warming is bad and her mind is weak,” says Sandy Mizhquiri ‘19. The stigmatism around this science is perpetuated by United States President Trump who frequently tweets about his disbelief in the science, quoted as tweeting, “In the beautiful Midwest, windchill temperatures are reaching minus 60 degrees, the coldest ever recorded. In coming days, expected to get even colder. People can’t last outside even for minutes. What the h*ll is going on with Global Warming? Please come back fast, we need you!”
