One on one: Principal Joyce Kenner

Zoe Davis, Editor-in-chief

Beacon editor-in-chief Zoe Davis recently sat down with Principal Joyce Kenner to talk about her plans for the next few years at WY.

What are your goals and plans for WY in the coming school year?

My focus for the next couple of years will be the AP Capstone program and the UIC dual enrollment program, which is not just with UIC but with various colleges in the Chicagoland area. I want to expose our students to more college opportunities and also programs in order to enhance their resume for college. My second focus would be to improve and renovate our school. It’s a beautiful school but we need some updating, some renovation.

What types of renovations are you hoping to make?

This is a surprise but hopefully by September students will see some additional renovations of the building. It could be the bathrooms, it could be the library floor- some small projects that we think will be appreciated by our students.

What do you want WY students to know before school ends?

I will always say that I want our students to have a restful and peaceful summer. I want it to be stimulating as well. I would like for them to continue to read over the summer so they can prepare for the next school year. I want all students, whether they be 7th grade or 11th grade, to start focusing on what they want to do for college. Where do they see themselves and what they want their career path to be, and I’m hopeful that everyone will participate in some sort of summer enrichment program to help them make these career choices.
