Spend winter days in Chicago

Claire Bentley, Arts and Trends Editor

Picture this (living in Chicago, it’ll be easy): it’s cold, there’s a negative something-or-other wind chill, and you want to avoid the outdoors at all costs. What do you do? Here are some things you could do in the safety of a heated establishment.

Art Institute/Museum of Contemporary Art: You can spend a good amount of time walking around and seeing loads of art. Both museums, luckily, are in the vicinity of train stations in the Loop, so hopefully you won’t be outside for too long. Some exhibits open throughout the winter at the Art Institute are “The City Lost and Found: Capturing New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, 1960-1980” and “Jesùs Rafeal Soto: Penetrable de Chicago.” Exhibits open at MCA are “MCA DNA: Alexander Calder” and “Body Doubles.” Both museums are free on Tuesdays.

See a movie: if you have a whole day of freedom, then take a trip to the closest movie theater and see a movie. Some movies in theaters now are “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay,” “Gone Girl”, “Birdman” and “Nightcrawler.” “Exodus: Gods and Kings” will be released Dec. 12, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five” on Dec. 17, and “The Interview” on Dec. 26.

Bake: Nothing beats homemade food, especially since you get to eat it afterwards. Consult Google for recipes – from classic Chocolate Chip Cookies to unusual Cinnamon Apple Rings, there is no limit to how creative you can get. Tons of recipe ideas can be found on websites like Pinterest or FoodNetwork.

Make a House of Cards: Grab all the decks of cards in your house and build a house of cards. It’s challenging and takes up time, and you could even watch the show House of Cards on Netflix at the same time.

Winter Wonderfest: Navy Pier holds a number of indoor fun events, like Winter Wonderfest, which is from Dec. 5 to Jan. 11. Not only is there an indoor Ferris Wheel and indoor skating rink, but there is food, lots of rides and it’s a good way to spend your day or evening. General admission tickets are $5 and Activity Admission tickets are $25.

Make mix CDs: Who wants to buy CDs anymore? Or even use them? Well, if you’re tired of listening to music through our phone, then put together all of your favorite songs and burn them onto a CD so you can keep it forever and blast it through your house on the stereo.

Build a fort: Grab a friend and try to make the most glorious blanket fort (or use anything, for that matter) that will beat any other kid’s fort. Forts make everything way more fun, so in the meantime grab a book or watch some Netflix and don’t come out until it’s time to go to bed (or don’t come out at all).

Go to a concert: In a city with an amazing plethora of music, it’s impossible to not find a concert to go to. From inexpensive to expensive, venues like Reggies, Martyrs, Beat Kitchen, Subterranean and the Metro are always hosting shows. Not only can you see live bands, there are also DJs, rappers, open mics, and tons of local bands citywide.

Netflix: When all else fails, you can never go wrong with watching movies and TV shows on Netflix. There’s a large variety–from “Grease” to “Breaking Bad,” you can’t go wrong.

All in all, Chicago provides a multitude of things to do in the winter. You can’t be bored just yet.
