On Saturday, May 6th the Whitney Young Girls Track and Field Team took home their third city championship in a row. Following a dominant performance in 2016 in which the Lady Dolphins scored more points than second and third place combined, the 2017 championship was slightly closer, with the Dolphins scoring 135 points and the Broncos of Kenwood scoring 112, but they prevailed nonetheless. Ella Behrens ‘19 says that the competition “was stronger this year, but we came and did what we needed to do to win.”

The Dolphins were able to win because of their strength across the board- they scored in every single event. Maniga McClendon ‘17 says “We were more diverse when it came to having people in every event and scoring in every event, which got us the W.” Amira Young ‘18 won the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, and the 400 meter dash and brought the 4×100 meter relay to a second place finish, adding 38 points to the team score. As defending state champion in the 100 and 200 meter dash looking towards the upcoming state series, Amira Young says “I just like to stay focused on me and my training.” Alana Berry, ‘20, also played a big role in scoring points for the team, contributing to first place finishes in the sprint medley relay and the 4×400 meter relay as well as a third place finish in the 800 meter run.

In addition to the Varsity city championship, the frosh/soph lady Dolphins got 2nd in their division, and the varsity boys tied for 3rd place. Despite windy conditions, it was a great day for the Dolphins!
