Valerie Spann has been a part of the WY community for 20 years now. She is one of our school clerks and handles budgeting, purchasing, student travel and Ventra cards. When she isn’t in the main office, you can find her coaching the girls basketball team. She has coached here since the beginning of ’93 and was offered a job to work in the main office briefly after her arrival to WY. A typical day for Spann includes working long hours, but states that one of her favorite parts of the job is that it’s never boring. “Every day is different. Nothing is routine,” Spann says. She describes one day on the job that took a turn of events. She is in the main office, it’s quiet as usual and policemen abruptly pull up in front of the school from every direction, and run in the school saying that they received a call that there were shots fired in the school. The school advises everyone in the building that this is a code red situation, and for everyone to stay in their rooms. Once things straighten out, authorities discover that they received a prank call and they left WY. This is one day she will never forget. Spann loves the students here, and what’s most important to her is the well-being of the environment around her. “I always try to be available to students since I always had people around me when I was in school that cared for me,” Spann explains.
