It’s not quite volleyball but it’s not quite four square, it’s something in between. It’s called Spikeball (or “Roundnet” depending on who you ask)! Have you ever been walking in the park and seen a couple of teenagers bouncing a yellow ball on a little black trampoline? You may have already witnessed Spikeball! Spikeball is a relatively new sport/club that is sweeping the nation and coincidentally sweeping the athletic and non-athletic population of Whitney Young! You may be wondering, “How is this crazy game played?” Well,l I’m here to answer your questions. It is played 2 vs 2, with a taut hula hoop sized Spikeball net placed between the teams.  A player starts a point by serving the ball down on the net so it ricochets up at his opponents. They have up to three hits between them (just like Volleyball) to control the ball and bounce it back off the net. Once a ball is not bounced back up or touches the ground, that is a point for the opposing team. During the rally, a player can move as far away as they seem necessary with no limiting boundaries. These very limited rules allows for large amounts of creativity to be displayed on the field. “Come and join us!” says Club founder, Joshua Nakashima ‘19. “It’s a very good club, with a great environment!” says the Club co-founder Ben Werner ‘19. “I never played spikeball before but I already love it” says Cristian Moctezuma 19’. The club meets Mondays and Fridays after school in Gold House and any deviation from this schedule will be announced. If there are any questions in regards to the club and future meeting dates/updates, the club can be contacted on their Instagram page @wyspikeball.
