Where’s the Winter Weather?

Wheres the Winter Weather?

Don’t you usually feel extremely cold when you travel to Whitney Young during the months of January and February? Don’t you feel as though this year is weirdly warm? I know I do. I am not alone. Kristin Reid ‘19 says, “People say global warming isn’t real, so how is it 50 degrees in January in Chicago?” During this winter season, the weather has been changing constantly.

“I think the weather change affects travel time and the unpredictability is very inconvenient for those with set seasonal schedules,” notes Nandi Myhand ‘21. While the past winters have made Chicagoans feel freezing, this past week has been unseasonably warm. Not only does it almost feel like summer, but we barely see snow these days in Chicago. This has caused many people to believe that this is a result of climate change. David Bradford ‘19 mentions, “the alternating weather patterns we’ve experienced this winter are an important and direct effect of climate change. Unfortunately, our current presidential administration refuses to acknowledge this problem.” The climate change has become so severe to the point where areas, such as the Isle de Jean Charles, Louisiana, are evacuating people to protect them from the flooding caused by melting icebergs. If the Earth’s temperature consistently increases every year, what will the temperature be like in 20 years? Clearly, the weather will be inevitably warmer.
