Have you recently turned 18 and are looking to get more politically involved? Well, the mayoral elections are just around the corner and on January 17th and 18th, Whitney Young will be hosting a mayoral forum during 3rd and 4th period that is exclusive to Whitney Young students. The candidates will have the opportunity to speak about their policies and beliefs, as well as to answer any questions that our students may have. Katie Moynihan ’19, one of the many students that will be attending the forum, stated, “One of the many reasons that students don’t get out and vote once they turn 18 is because they don’t really know anything about the candidates. The fact that Whitney is giving us all the opportunity to learn about each one is really useful and will for sure increase the amount of political involvement within the school.” Not only is this is a great time for students that were not able to vote during the 2018 midterm elections to get politically involved, but it also gives them the rare chance to actually interact with the candidates to get a better feel for who they will be voting for on February 26th.

Tinuola Adebukola ‘19, who will also be attending the mayoral forum, believes, “One of the biggest issues that young students experience is that of being too lazy to even look into the candidates. I feel like now since this information is so easily accessible to everyone, there’s no reason that they shouldn’t attend.” So, if you are interested, you can go and get your permission slips at the school store and register yourself to vote at the booth in blue house!
