This past Sunday, November 4, the Whitney Young Girls Swimming and Diving teams competed for the title of City Champions. Both the Frosh-Soph and Varsity teams walked away victorious. If you were one of the many supporters packed into the Whitney Young fan section, then you witnessed history being made. This was the first time since 2001 that our Varsity Girls Swimming and Diving team has won city. Dr. Kenner as well as countless parents, family members, and friends helped cheer the team on through an eventful, nail-biting meet.

The day started off rough with the Dolphins trailing behind both Northside College Prep, who had won the diving portion the night before, and Lane Tech. It wasn’t until the second half of the meet that our swimmers were able to turn things around. “I know we’re the best team in the city, let’s prove it!” Coach Maggie Pircon tells swimmers between events. This positive energy is what encouraged the big comeback the team pulled off. “The last time Whitney Young won City was 17 years ago, coincidentally the same year that us seniors were born! I am so proud of all of these amazing girls, they truly are the best team out there!” says co-captain, Cassi Chung’19.

So what’s next for our swimmers after ending the seventeen year losing streak? This upcoming Saturday the girls will race at UIC hoping to make an IHSA state cut. This Sectional meet is the only time during the season where a swimmer is able to qualify for state- either by placing first in an event, or beating a certain time. Assistant Coach, Andrew Peterson exclaims

“I am confident that we will at least be able to send a relay to state, possibly some individual swimmers as well.“ Don’t miss another weekend of exciting swimming, be sure to make it to Sectionals on November 10!
