Last Wednesday the Whitney Young Girls Volleyball Team made CPS history when they qualified for the super sectionals game. The team played against Saint Ignatius College Prep and won with the score 2-1. Ignoring the pressure of defeating the opponents once again, the girls started the game with a strong mentality. The first set did not end up as planned resulting in the girls losing 21-15. Because of the defeat, the girls became more determined to win. “They were the first game of our season so we were talking about how they can’t be our last,” states Sophie Wang ‘20. This determination along with focus led them to win the second set 25-14. When they entered the third set, the girls gave it their all knowing that this set was their last chance to win. The support of students at the game helped the players gain determination. “It was so fun watching them and cheering them on!” notes Sonia Meisner ‘19. They then fought extremely hard to win the third set with the score 25-19. “I am super proud of them and this just proves that the women of Whitney Young can do anything they put their minds to!” says June Tenfelde ‘20. With the season finished, the girls hope to make it this far next year.
