After having a badminton club at Whitney Young for many years, this year the girls from the badminton club decided to recruit people to form a badminton team and play competitively. Since Whitney Young has never had a badminton team, they do not have enough funds to run the team, so they are trying to fundraise. In the upcoming weeks, they are going to try to fundraise for the badminton team and host events like bake sales. Fiona Chen 19’ says, “I am super excited for this year’s new badminton team. I have been in badminton club since I was a freshman. It is nice to see that they are creating a team this year.” Many people are excited for this year’s new badminton team because they have been waiting for a badminton comeback. This year Sharon Li 19’ says, “There have been many girls who signed up for our badminton team. We are excited to see that there are many girls interested in badminton.” This past Wednesday, October 3, there was a badminton meeting where Coach Cassidy talked about the upcoming badminton team and how to join. He mentioned  title IX and how Whitney Young needs more girls participating in sports teams because there are less opportunities for girls. Mearieta Clemente 19’ says, “This is such a nice opportunity for girls to join a sport. It is amazing in such little time fourty plus girls have already been recruited. I am looking forward to being in the badminton team this year.” It sounds like many girls are super enthusiastic for this year’s possible badminton team. Let’s look forward to playing some badminton!
